In the movie I find the that the main point is to "Carpe Diem!" than to learn poetry since most of the situations circulating around "seize the day!" lead to a death and a couple of changes in the group members personalities. So in my opinion poetry does have a large part but it is not really expressed threw the reactions of the students in his class. The reason why was because the movie did not show us how to use poetry besides "Carpe Diem!" in our lives. Over all I think the movie could have done better with expressing poetry more.

DPS Lesson Plan
Poetry in the movie is trying to tell us that it can not be graded on by a scale. Poetry is supposed to flow threw our ears and into our brains with a enjoyable sound. Poetry can also be expressed threw a personal experiences. When Mr. Keating says "Carpe Diem!" he means "seize the day!" don't throw your life away to what other people want from you but do what you want to do. "Carpe Diem!" inspired Neal and Todd to open up and wake up and smell the fresh air of their new life path ahead of them. Although Neal would take things to the next level in committing suicide he did show his braveness against his father about acting.

Dead Poets Society Lesson Plan
There is a scene near the beginning of the movie which is Keating asking all of his students to tear out the introduction in the poetry textbook which contains the preface “Understanding Poetry”. He asks his students to do so because he wants them to have their own thoughts. He wants them to analyze poetry with their own heart. From this we can know that poetry is something that cannot be judged by a set of traditional methods. Poetry is the true feeling that comes from the interior world of the author’s heart. It’s a kind of expression of emotion. Only with heart, you can feel the real beauty of it. You can feel its endless glamour. On the other hand, poetry is also what we stay a live for. Keating says this to the boys in the movie. According to Keating’s words, though many things like medicine, business, economic or engineering can keep our lives going on well normally. They are not enough. We still need something for our inner world and only things like poetry can satisfied our request. It gives us the chance to enjoy the beauty in our world. It helps us learn the true essence of our life.
In the film, poetry is something that gives people enjoyment. People can get rid of the endless hard work and other thing bothering them in their lives by reading poetry. They can put their feelings into their reading. In this way, they can relax themselves. This is similar to my opinion of the role poetry plays in our daily life. I think poetry is a really necessary object in our life. It is a tool for people to express their feelings. Sometimes when people can’t left off their emotions, they write poetry. And through poetry, maybe people can understand the author better. It’s a easier way. For example, in the movie, there is a short poetry about seizing the day. It says “the same flower that smiles today, tomorrow will be dying”. There is a simile in the poetry. It uses the example of flowers to tell the readers that cherishing time is really important because your life will pass really quickly. Readers can comprehend this much better than if you only tells them directly that you should cherish your life. It’s more vivid and gives people more clear impress. So besides what the film says about poetry, I think poetry is also sometimes a good teacher to us. We can learn a lot by reading it. It makes our soul clean. It makes our heart calm. It helps to make the civilization develop. To me, poetry is a symbol of elegance and romantic. It has already become a part of our daily life.

The Dead Poet's Society
1) What is the movie saying about poetry? Support your comments.
The movie, "The Dead Poet's Society," is portraying poetry as a tool. A tool for and idea or a belief, to create free thinkers and individuality in our lives to as Mr. Keating said, "Carpe Diem," or "Seize the Day." We saw many examples alike supporting this belief in Mr. Keating's inspired students. Like how Keating reached out and got to Neal, who directly diobeyed his father, seized the day and acted as Puck in a Midsummer Night's dream play. Although he did commit suicide that evening, it is beyond the point, since Neal's dad had led his son to the belief the only way of not being a honor bound family servant was suicide. Mr. Keating however also reached out to Todd who finally went from being the shy, under confident student, to an individual of society, all because Mr. Keating taught him to, "find his voice." Also, the story had a bit of romance, when Mr. Keating had led Knox to seize the day and make his life extraordinary by following the girl of his dreams to a point of even going to her class and reciting Poetry for her. Thereby The movie portrays poetry as a tool of an idea, to express your belief to others, as Mr. Keating expressed 'Carpe Diem' to the boys.
2) What do you think of Poetry? How is it similar or different than the movie's point of view?
My opinion of poetry was always that poetry is a tool of communication to express your feeling or ideas to others. The movie, I find portrays poetry almost exactly the same way as I described, in both questions number 1 and 2. I thought before that poetry can be seen through different lenses and the movie just strengthened my belief in this. This movie turned my vague idea on how poetry affects my life into a clear image on poetry defines my life. "Gather ye rose buds while ye may, as tomorrow there may be no flower."

Dead Poets Society Q's 10-11
10. What is the movie saying about poetry?
In Dead Poets Society, Mr Keating teaches his students in a very different and original way. In his very first lesson, he reads them a poem which starts with "gather ye rosebuds while ye may." This one stanza really describes the entire meaning behind the movie. "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may" is a way of saying "carpe diem" or "seize the day," which all the main charaters learn how to do. The movie describes poetry as something that can inspire people. For example, Knox was in love with a girl who already had a boyfriend. By the end of the movie, he had found the courage to ask her on a date, all because of Mr Keating's help with living life to the fullest through inspiring poetry.
11. What do you think of poetry? How is it similar and different then the movie’s view of poetry?
Personally, I have always thought of poetry to be words that have a certain rhythm that are very descriptive until recently. I have found some pieces of work that are actually inspiring. I think my view is somewhat similar from the movie's because in the movie, the students change their entire view on life because of how inspiring they find poetry. I don't become that inspired when reading poetry but I still feel connected to some pieces of work.

Mr. Keating and poetry influenced the students in many ways, from the understanding that poetry can't be taught with graphs and math, to finding their own voice and speak for themselves.
What do you think about poetry? How is it similar and different than the movie's view of poetry?
In my opinion, I think I can connect to Todd, I've always had trouble making up poems. Somehow they never seemed to come out like I wanted them to be and most of them ended up in the garbage. There was always something missing in them, they were incomplete. Imagination is the key of poetry, and it can be expressed with anything. I used to worry about whether it rhymed or not, and if it didn't I would just start over. Now I have a different perspective of poetry, it's not only a couple of lines that rhyme, but a story told through a different fantasy, a fantasy that makes me wonder how they came up with them, but the answer will always be: "Use your imagination and anything is possible" and this movie showed me this. Not everything needs to rhyme, just let your imagination guide you when you start and you'll end up with a wonderful piece of poetry, even if you only talk about a cat, or your grampa.

Dead Poet Society Questions
What is the movie saying about poetry?
In the movie “Dead Poets Society”, poetry is meant to be viewed differently for everyone. There is no exact explanation to what a poem means exactly, but rather through what each and every different person’s perspective of the poem is. Poetry cannot be measured using graphs, nor can it be teached as equally as mathematics by simply utilizing and reading off a textbook. Therefore, Mr. Keating told the students to rip out the pages of “introduction to Poetry” in their poetry textbooks. On the first day of school, Mr. Keating, the English teacher told the students to recite the first stanza of a poem, “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may”, which means “Carpe Diem”, Latin for “Seize the Day”. His message was to state that people only get one chance to live, so make your lives extraordinary, take initiative in your life, and follow your dreams. This connects to one of the characters called Todd Anderson. First, he attended the school, hoping to follow his older brother’s footsteps, living his life in his brother’s shadow. However, throughout the movie, Todd clearly grown out of his “timid and shy” personality and started to stand up for himself and finding his own voice. Also, Neal, Todd’s roommate can connect and understand the meaning since his father did not allow him to follow his dreams in pursuing a career in acting. Mr. Keating showed the students a whole different way of understanding poetry other than what the usual poetry textbook states.
What do you think of poetry? How is it similar and different then the movie’s view of poetry?
I always thought poetry was simply about writing poems, always worrying about whether the poem had enough syllables, or making the verses rhyme. Never even thought about looking beyond all that and write poems that relate to what I feel. Also, when reading poems, people are so used to translating word by word in to the literature we comprehend, but not actually thinking insightfully about what the poem might mean to you, others and the poet him/herself. That’s the main difference from the movie’s point of view of poetry compared to mine. However, now I have come to think of poetry the way Mr. Keating in the movie stated. Everyone can write poems, like when Mr. Keating told Todd stand in front of the class and say out the first things that come in mind. He ended up creating a wonderful piece of literature that made the whole class applaud. This proves that everyone can create poems freely and without any restrictions.
